LEED and environmental performance

Work on LEED-oriented projects starts with measurable environmental performance, not labels. Daylight availability, glare, and useful daylight illuminance are studied alongside solar heat gain and cooling load, so the envelope is tuned to its climate before aesthetic decisions are locked. Orientation, glazing ratio, shading, and material choices are weighed against credit thresholds and real occupant comfort.

Environmental analysis runs on Ladybug Tools inside Grasshopper, turning weather data into sun paths, radiation maps, and daylight metrics. Those insights feed back into the parametric model so each design move can be checked against energy targets and certification criteria, keeping the green strategy evidence-based and auditable.

Working within the IBC

The International Building Code sets the baseline for occupancy, construction type, fire-resistance ratings, egress, and allowable area and height. Designs are developed against these limits from the outset, so use classification, separation, and exiting are resolved as the plan takes shape rather than retrofitted late.

We are developing a review methodology in which drawing notes, schedules, and design narrative can be read against codified IBC requirements — occupancy load, travel distance, fire-resistance ratings, and separation — as a structured first pass. Licensed judgement and the authority having jurisdiction remain the final word.

DOB drawings: egress and fire protection

Department of Buildings submissions demand a coordinated, defensible set: egress plans with occupant loads and travel distances, fire separation and compartmentation, rated assemblies, and the standpipe, sprinkler, and alarm coverage that life safety depends on. Every sheet must agree with the others and with the code analysis behind them.

This is where coordination complexity peaks: architectural, structural, and MEP information has to reconcile across dozens of sheets without contradiction. The work is methodical and cross-referenced, exactly the kind of accumulated consistency that a generative image cannot produce and that a documented, headed workflow is built to hold.

Dynamo for standard-shape generative design

For regular, code-driven massing, Dynamo automates the relationships that programming depends on: floor area to facade area, exposure and glazing ratios, unit mix, and core-to-leasable efficiency. Standard shapes are parameterized so target areas and ratios drive the geometry directly.

This makes early programming fast and testable. As floor plates, setbacks, or envelope assumptions change, the model recomputes areas and exposure in real time, so feasibility and compliance can be read at a glance instead of remodeled by hand.

Inventor and Rhino for structural generative elements

For components that must perform mechanically, the work moves into industrial tools. Inventor and Rhino are used to develop generative structural elements such as brackets, nodes, and frames, shaped to carry defined torque and compression rather than only to look resolved.

Generative iterations are evaluated against load cases so geometry follows the forces it must resist. The result is parts that are both manufacturable and structurally honest, bridging architectural intent and engineered, fabrication-ready detail.

A federated model in Navisworks runs clash detection across disciplines, catching hard and soft conflicts before they reach the site. It is the quiet, unglamorous coordination step that keeps the documented set honest.
